The exit opens out into an open area that immediately makes me dizzy.

The ceiling looks like a display from a fun house where mirrors and lights give off the illusion there’s no end. It makes it hard to figure out how big the building is. Since we came in through the alley, we have no idea if this place takes up the entire block, or just a small portion of the building.

The round room offers different paths to exit through, with stands in front of each option, but most of the archways are dark. I guess, since it’s a free day, they limit what we can and can’t see.

“Look.” Buddy points to a kiosk in the middle of the room, and we head over to it. “Finally. A map of this place.”

A bright yellow dot, which says You Are Here, glows on the mostly dark map. The part of the museum we’ve already passed through glow with their room names, like Weapons Room and the Forge. From where we stand now, only one of the next sections shows as available. It’s marked as Stage One, Italy.

“Why is most of the map besides the Italy exhibit dark?” I ask, knowing none of them can answer my question.

“Who knows.” Coop points to the bottom corner. “Even the legend is grayed out. And what’s that line at the top that looks like you can go to different tabs? It’s grayed out, too.”

I lean closer to examine the bar Coop points to. When I tentatively reach out to touch it, it beeps like an error code, and I jump backward, throwing my hands behind my back.

“This is why I never go to history museums. Could this be an even bigger waste of time? Science museums are so much better.” Buddy walks to the other side of the board. “Same thing over here,” he says, sounding disappointed. “Most of the life science museums have interactive areas and, well, people who are available to ask questions.”

“Look, none of us are happy to be here, but we just have to push forward. Let’s go check out Italy.” These guys are going to be the death of me. It’s not like any of us want to be here. We’re all just making the best of Mack’s impulsive behavior. “If we keep following the lit path, we should get to the end soon. I can’t imagine the building it too much bigger than what we’ve already seen.”

“I think this place is pretty cool.” Mack bounces forward, toward the lit archway with the stand that reads Italy. “We would have been bored in a regular, stuffy museum.”

“We would have been done had we gone to a regular, stuffy museum,” Coop mutters but follows Mack toward Italy.

I ignore both of them and walk up to the entrance.

“This gothic architecture is amazing. Now, this is what a museum should look like.” The details in the stonework make my fingers itch to investigate, and I understand Mack’s obsession with touching everything. The entrance
